NJ TRANSIT Offers Refunds for Unused Tickets, Implements New Expiration Policy
Major changes include refunds on old tickets and a reduced validity period for new purchases to combat fraud and save costs.
MORRISTOWN, NJ – NJ TRANSIT announced a significant update to their ticket policies today, introducing a refund opportunity for unused one-way and rail 10-trip tickets purchased before June 1, 2024. These refunds are available from August 1, 2024, through December 31, 2024, as part of an effort to adapt to best practices within the transit industry and reduce potential fraud.
This policy adjustment aims to address the concerns of travelers who may have tickets that will expire unused by the new deadline of July 31, 2024. For tickets bought on or after June 1, 2024, the validity has been shortened significantly; they must now be used within 30 days of purchase, including the date of purchase. This change aligns with transit industry standards across the nation and is expected to save NJ TRANSIT an estimated $25 million annually.
The updated ticket policy, initially part of a fare adjustment proposal discussed on January 24, 2024, received approval during the April board meeting of NJ TRANSIT. The decision was widely publicized on May 1, 2024, extending the validity of all one-way tickets bought before July 1, 2024, to July 31, giving customers a three-month window to utilize any tickets currently held.
NJ TRANSIT will ensure that customers are compensated for any pre-June 1, 2024, purchases that remain unused due to these policy changes, supporting those at risk of losing out on previously bought fares.
