Upcoming Lane Closures on Routes 5, 120, and 124 in Bergen and Union Counties

Daytime construction to cause weeks of delays due to infrastructure upgrades.

Motorists in Bergen and Union counties should prepare for several weeks of daytime lane closures on Routes 5, 120, and 124, starting tomorrow, July 18. The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has announced these closures to facilitate the resetting of manholes and repairing of drainage inlets along these key roadways.

Route 5 will experience alternating traffic from 9 AM to 3 PM on weekdays. Closures will affect stretches between Ray Avenue in Ridgefield and Inwood Terrace in Fort Lee, as well as between Arcadian Way in Fort Lee and River Road/CR 505 in Edgewater.

On Route 120, closures will also occur from 9 AM to 3 PM, affecting both northbound and southbound lanes from Route 3 in East Rutherford to the Route 120 Bridge over Berry’s Creek in Carlstadt. At least one lane will remain open in each direction throughout the construction period.

Route 124 will see similar disruptions, with a single lane closed from 9 AM to 3 PM on weekdays between Molter Avenue and Springfield Avenue in Springfield, extending to Valley Road in Union Township and Millburn Avenue/CR 630 in Maplewood. Traffic will alternate where the road is a single lane in each direction.

These closures are part of a broader $10.5 million state-funded project aimed at improving approximately two and a half miles of Route 5, two miles of Route 120, and one mile of Route 124. The project includes milling and paving operations, drainage improvements, upgrades to ADA-compliant curb ramps and sidewalks, restriping, and other necessary enhancements. Completion is slated for spring 2025.
