Former Atlantic County Nurse Sentenced to 33 Months for Child Pornography Possession
Egg Harbor City Man Faces Prison Term and Supervised Release for Disturbing Crimes
In a significant judicial decision today, Anthony Barbarino, a 38-year-old former nurse from Egg Harbor City, New Jersey, was sentenced to 33 months in prison for possessing images of child sexual abuse. The sentencing was handed down by Chief U.S. District Judge Renée Marie Bumb in Camden federal court, following Barbarino's earlier guilty plea to a charge of child pornography possession.
Court documents and statements revealed that from April 12, 2022, to August 3, 2022, Barbarino knowingly held 93 still photographs and 108 videos depicting child sexual abuse on three electronic devices. These included images of a prepubescent minor and others portraying sadistic or masochistic conduct, highlighting the severe nature of the offenses.
Barbarino's arrest on August 3, 2022, followed his career as a nurse, marking a stark contrast between his professional responsibilities and criminal activities. In response to his actions, Judge Bumb not only sentenced him to prison but also imposed a decade of supervised release. Furthermore, Barbarino is required to pay substantial restitution: $13,000 to his victims, alongside $5,000 under the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act and an additional $5,000 pursuant to the Amy, Vicky, and Andy Child Pornography Victim Assistance Act.
U.S. Attorney Sellinger credited special agents of Homeland Security Investigations Newark, under the direction of Acting Special Agent in Charge Spiros Karabinas, with the investigation leading to the sentencing. He also thanked the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office for its assistance.
The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elisa T. Wiygul of the Criminal Division in Camden.
