Overturned Trucks and Construction Chaos Hit Morris County Roads

Drivers face lane closures, delays, and detours with multiple construction zones and a major incident on I-80.

Morris County drivers, brace yourselves—today’s commute has turned into an obstacle course of lane closures, construction zones, and an overturned tractor-trailer causing havoc on Interstate 80. From Parsippany to Mount Arlington and beyond, delays are piling up on key highways and local routes. If ever there were a day to leave early—or work from home—this is it.

Overturned Tractor-Trailer on I-80: Major Delays

The most significant disruption comes from Interstate 80 westbound near Exit 30 (Howard Boulevard) in Mount Arlington, where an overturned tractor-trailer has brought traffic to a grinding halt. As of 12:06 p.m., the ramp to Exit 30 remains closed, and the right lane of I-80 westbound is also shut down. Emergency crews are on site, but delays are expected to linger into the afternoon.

Construction: Lane Closures

If the I-80 incident weren’t enough, construction projects across major routes in Morris County are adding to driver frustration. Lane closures and shoulder work are scattered across I-287, US 46, NJ 23, NJ 10, and more. Here’s a breakdown of today’s worst offenders:

I-80

  • Eastbound lanes near Exit 47A (I-280 in Parsippany) have a left lane closure until 2:00 p.m.
  • Westbound lanes near Exit 34 (NJ 15 in Jefferson Township) have a right shoulder closure until 3:00 p.m.
  • Further delays can be expected near Exit 42 (US 202/Littleton Road in Parsippany), where the left lane is closed until 3:00 p.m.

I-287

  • Southbound between Exit 35 (NJ 124 in Morristown) and Exit 30 (North Maple Avenue in Bernards Township): Right lane closed until 3:00 p.m.
  • Northbound near Exit 39 (NJ 10 in Hanover Township): Right shoulder closed until 3:00 p.m.

US 46

Construction is in full swing with closures in both directions:

  • Parsippany-Troy Hills Township: Multiple closures, including lanes and shoulders, from CR 654 (Cherry Hill Road) to US 202 (Parsippany Boulevard). Delays will persist until 3:00 p.m.
  • Mountain Lakes to Denville: Right shoulders closed on both eastbound and westbound lanes.

NJ 23

The busy highway isn’t spared either:

  • Southbound: Right lane closed between CR 618 (Kinnelon Road) and Alexander Avenue in Pequannock Township until 3:00 p.m.
  • Northbound: Closures extend from Maple Lake Road in Butler to Paterson-Hamburg Turnpike in West Milford Township until 1:00 p.m.

NJ 24 and NJ 10

  • NJ 24: The westbound ramp to northbound I-287 in Hanover Township is fully closed until 2:00 p.m.
  • NJ 10: Eastbound at South Jefferson Road in Hanover Township has a left lane closure until 2:00 p.m.

With a sea of closures and detours, drivers are encouraged to plan alternate routes, monitor live traffic updates, and give themselves plenty of extra travel time. Whether it’s the overturned truck blocking I-80 or the miles of construction cones along US 46 and NJ 23, today’s commute is shaping up to test even the calmest motorists.

Looking Ahead

Some projects, like the ongoing bridge replacement at Exit 30 on I-80 in Mount Arlington, will cause long-term lane shifts “until further notice,” so expect more delays in the coming weeks.

For now, drivers in Morris County may find solace in one thing: the honking horns and brake lights might just be today’s unofficial symphony of patience. Safe travels!
