Sinkhole Closes I-80 in Wharton, Multiple Construction Projects Impact Roads Across Morris County

Drivers Advised to Expect Delays and Detours Due to Roadwork and Emergency Repairs

A major sinkhole on Interstate 80 eastbound has resulted in a full lane closure and detour at Exit 34 (NJ-15) in Wharton as of 5:35 a.m. today. Emergency construction crews are on-site addressing the issue, but there is no estimated time for reopening. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes and expect delays.

In addition to the sinkhole, several construction projects across Morris County are causing lane closures and traffic shifts, including:

Interstate 80

  • Eastbound near Exit 25 (US 206) in Mount Olive Township – A broken basin is being replaced, causing lane shifts from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Westbound near Exit 30 (Howard Blvd) in Mount Arlington – Two left lanes are closed for pothole repairs and highway restriping from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Westbound at Exit 30 in Mount Arlington – Ongoing bridge replacement work has shifted the left lane until further notice.

U.S. Route 46

  • Westbound in Denville Township (near CR 644/Main St) – Right lane closed from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for construction.
  • Eastbound in Rockaway Township (near CR 644/Main St) – Right lane closed from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for construction.

New Jersey Route 23

  • Southbound between Butler and Pequannock Township – Right lane closed from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for construction.
  • Northbound between Pequannock Township and Butler – Right lane closed from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for construction.

New Jersey Route 124

  • Eastbound from Madison to Summit – One right lane closed from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for construction near Waverly Place (CR 608) and JFK Parkway (CR 649).
