NJ American Water Invested Over $520 Million in System Upgrades in 2024

Infrastructure Improvements Enhance Water Quality, Reliability, and Fire Protection Across Service Areas

New Jersey American Water has announced a $520 million investment in water and wastewater system upgrades across its service areas in 2024. The investment, which supports critical infrastructure improvements, also contributed to the creation of more than 7,800 jobs, according to Mark McDonough, President of New Jersey American Water.

"The capital investments we make across our systems provide more robust, efficient, and resilient infrastructure, which helps us continue to meet or surpass water quality standards and deliver better service for our customers."

These annual investments are focused on modernizing and maintaining water and wastewater infrastructure, including treatment plants, tanks, pump stations, pipes, fire hydrants, and metering equipment. The projects aim to improve water quality, pressure, service reliability, and fire protection for customers statewide.

Key System Improvements in 2024

  • Water Mains:
    • $150 million was allocated to install, replace, or rehabilitate over 55 miles of water mains.
    • The initiative includes a $2.2 million investment in leak detection equipment to improve system efficiency.
  • Fire Hydrants and Valves:
    • $17 million was invested to replace 536 fire hydrants and 1,328 valves, ensuring proper fire protection and system functionality.
  • Service Line Replacements:
    • $99.6 million was used to replace 12,055 service lines, reducing the risk of service disruptions.
  • Water Treatment and Production Improvements:
    • $68.3 million was invested in treatment plant upgrades, including:
      • Jumping Brook Water Treatment Plant
      • Canal Road Water Treatment Plant
      • Groundwater well improvements in multiple service areas
  • Wastewater Treatment and System Upgrades:
    • More than $18 million was allocated to improve wastewater treatment facilities, including:
      • Filter and pump upgrades at Long Hill Wastewater Treatment Plant
      • Lift station improvements at Lakewood Wastewater Treatment Plant
      • Operational upgrades at Hawk Pointe Wastewater Treatment Plant
  • Storage Tanks:
    • $4 million was invested in rehabilitating two tanks and conducting detailed inspections of 37 tanks to ensure long-term reliability.
