I-80 Eastbound Repairs Continue in Wharton as NJDOT Works to Stabilize Roadway

NJDOT crews conducting round-the-clock drilling and grouting operations to address subsurface conditions

WHARTON, N.J. – The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is continuing its emergency repair efforts on I-80 eastbound between Exit 34 and the bridge over Route 15 in Wharton, Morris County. Crews are engaged in 24-hour drilling and grouting operations to stabilize the roadway and assess subsurface conditions, which will inform the design of a permanent repair.

According to NJDOT, the void identified last week underneath the center lane of I-80 eastbound has been stabilized, though additional work will be required. Construction barriers and fencing were installed over the weekend between the median and I-80 westbound to enhance safety as grouting continues.

As the drilling and grouting work continues, we are stabilizing I-80 eastbound and narrowing in on the area that will require a more lengthy repair,” NJDOT Commissioner Fran O’Connor said. “Once we have a better understanding of the subsurface conditions, we can finalize the design for a repair. In the meantime, we are exploring all options to improve traffic through the area while construction is ongoing.”

Ongoing Repair Efforts

As of Wednesday, March 5, NJDOT has made significant progress in the stabilization efforts:

  • 82 locations (61%) have been drilled for subsurface assessment.
  • 57 locations (42%) have been filled with grout to reinforce the roadway.
  • Additional drilling and grouting operations will continue to identify and address potential problem areas before they lead to sinkholes or depressions.

The repair process remains highly precise and time-consuming, requiring careful drilling to inject grout that spreads into voids, strengthening the road’s foundation. Multiple drill rigs are operating around the clock to complete the repairs as safely and efficiently as possible.

At this time, NJDOT has not provided an estimated completion date for the repairs, as additional investigations may reveal further areas in need of stabilization.

As they narrow in on the problem area, I’m confident that the necessary repairs will be completed in a manner that continues to keep the safety of commuters and residents as our top priority. We understand the inconvenience this has caused, and we are committed to resolving the issue as quickly as possible so that everyone can return to their daily routines without further disruption. We will continue to keep the public informed as we move through this process,” Senator Anthony M. Bucco said.

Traffic Mitigation Efforts

To help alleviate congestion in the region, NJDOT is coordinating with local officials and the New Jersey State Police to adjust traffic signal timing on Route 15, Route 10, and Route 46, which serve as detour and alternate routes.

Additional traffic mitigation measures include:

  • Digital messaging signs and communication with commercial truckers to inform them of detours and alternate routes.
  • Continuous monitoring of traffic conditions by NJDOT and New Jersey State Police to make adjustments as necessary.
  • Public advisories encouraging motorists to avoid the area, plan extra travel time, and remain patient while repairs are ongoing.

While repairs have strengthened the roadway, we must focus on long-term solutions. This highway is a lifeline for our economy, and the businesses and workers impacted by these disruptions deserve support. New Jerseyans are resilient, but we cannot do this alone, and I will continue fighting for the resources our state needs,” Assemblywoman Aura K. Dunn said.

Motorists are urged to check 511nj.org for real-time travel updates and construction advisories. NJDOT continues to work with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to explore all available options to restore full mobility as soon as possible.
