Important Community Update: I-80 Westbound Closure

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) continues emergency repairs on I-80 near Exit 34. Crews are working around the clock, and NJDOT has shared the following targeted goals for restoring traffic:

  • By May 4: Two westbound lanes expected to reopen
  • By May 18: Two eastbound lanes expected to reopen
  • By June 25: Full restoration of all lanes in both directions

NJDOT is bringing in expert teams and employing infrastructure-sensitive methods to ensure the repairs are not only effective, but designed to support long-term stability and safety for the roadway.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has closed I-80 westbound at Exit 34B until further notice due to a significant median sinkhole discovered on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. We want to assure you that your local government is working closely with NJDOT to minimize disruption and ensure public safety.

What We're Doing

Our Township administration is in ongoing communication with NJDOT and state officials to:

  1. Monitor the ongoing repair efforts
  2. Adjust traffic signal timing on the Canfield Avenue and Route 10 intersection and assess 18 major intersections for further adjustments
  3. Advocate for safe resolution of the highway closure

We strongly encourage all residents to:

  1. Plan extra travel time for commutes
  2. Check alternate routes carefully
  3. Be aware of potential detours and traffic signal changes
