Road Closures and Delays Impact Major Morris County Roads

Multiple construction projects (including ongoing sinkhole repairs on I-80) and an isolated downed utility pole incident affect traffic across key highways in Morris County, with various lane closures and detours in effect throughout the day.

As of last night, a downed pole was reported on US 46 eastbound west of Naughright Road in Mount Olive Township. While all lanes remain open, drivers should exercise caution in the area.

As of 12:56 p.m., May 1, all lanes remain closed on I-80 eastbound due to sinkhole repairs - delays extend from just east of Exit 30 (Howard Boulevard) in Roxbury Township to just west of Exit 34 (NJ 15) in Wharton. Similarly, delays were also reported this afternoon on NJ 15 northbound from I-80 in Rockaway Township to just south of County Route 642/Dewey Avenue in Dover. These delays are due to the ongoing sinkhole repairs on I-80 and have spilled over to surrounding routes. All lanes remained open on NJ 15.

Ongoing construction across the region is contributing to further traffic impacts:

  • I-80 eastbound at Exit 34 (NJ 15) in Wharton is fully closed and detoured due to sinkhole repair construction, with the closure scheduled to continue until 12:00 p.m. on June 25, 2025.

  • NJ 23 northbound in Butler has one of three lanes closed just north of CR 511/Boonton Avenue until 3:00 p.m. on May 2, 2025.

  • Construction on US 46 eastbound and westbound in Parsippany-Troy Hills near CR 637/Beverwyck Road is affecting both left and right lanes, with closures extending until 3:00 p.m. in multiple sections.

  • US 46 in Denville Township and Mountain Lakes is also experiencing right shoulder closures in both directions until 3:00 p.m.

  • Additional closures and lane shifts are reported on NJ 53 in Denville Township, NJ 23 in Butler and Pequannock Township, US 202 southbound near I-287 in Montville Township, and I-280 eastbound near I-80 in Parsippany-Troy Hills, with end times ranging from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Motorists traveling through these areas should anticipate delays, seek alternate routes where possible, and remain alert for changing traffic patterns and roadside crews.
