Overnight Lane Closures Begin on I-287 Northbound for Long-Term Roadwork
Pavement preservation project between Bedminster and Morristown to bring overnight lane restrictions and daytime shoulder closures through early fall 2025.
Beginning Monday, May 12, motorists traveling northbound on Interstate 287 through Somerset and Morris counties will encounter recurring overnight lane closures as part of a long-term pavement preservation project overseen by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT). The construction zone stretches approximately 14 miles, from the interchange with Interstate 78 in Bedminster to the South Street/County Route 601 exit in Morristown.
Lane closures will occur nightly from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., Monday through Friday, and are expected to continue for several months. According to NJDOT, at least one travel lane will remain open overnight to maintain traffic flow. These closures are required to facilitate road restriping, the removal of raised pavement markers and rumble strips, and pavement repairs. The project scope also includes work on approximately five ramps along the corridor, which may be temporarily closed overnight. In those instances, motorists will be directed to posted detours.
In addition to nighttime work, daytime shoulder closures are scheduled on I-287 northbound from Monday, May 12, through Friday, May 16, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. These closures are intended for the installation of construction signage. Should weather conditions cause delays, shoulder closures may continue the following week, from May 19 to May 23.
The $7.7 million project is federally funded and aims to improve driving conditions on a heavily traveled stretch of highway that passes through several municipalities, including Bedminster, Far Hills, and Bernards Township in Somerset County, as well as Harding, Morris Township, and Morristown in Morris County. The preservation work includes both mainline milling and paving, along with similar treatment for selected ramps within the project limits.
Construction activities are scheduled to conclude by early fall 2025. NJDOT advises drivers to exercise caution, reduce speed in work zones, and anticipate delays. Real-time travel information and construction updates can be found at www.511nj.org.
All scheduled work is subject to change depending on weather conditions and other unforeseen circumstances.
