Attorney General Outlines Voter Protection Measures for New Jersey's 2025 Primary Election
Initiatives aim to ensure secure, accessible, and discrimination-free voting as early in-person voting begins June 3.
TRENTON — Ahead of New Jersey’s 2025 local primary election, Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin announced a series of safeguards to protect voting rights, ensure accessibility, and monitor for election-related misconduct. The measures will take effect with the start of early in-person voting on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, and are part of the state’s ongoing Voter Protection Initiative, which began in 2022.
The initiative, led by the Department of Law and Public Safety (LPS), is designed to address civil rights and voting rights issues that may arise during early voting or on Election Day. According to the announcement, the initiative will continue its collaboration with community partners to monitor and respond to issues related to voter access, intimidation, discrimination, and other violations of state law, including the New Jersey Civil Rights Act and the Law Against Discrimination.
“Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy. Here in New Jersey, we are proud to have free, fair, and secure elections, and we will work tirelessly to ensure that every eligible voter is able to exercise their fundamental right to vote,” said Attorney General Platkin. “We have the systems in place to address and resolve voting-related issues as they arise, and we will not tolerate any attempts to interfere with or disrupt our democratic process.”
Key components of the state’s election protection framework include:
-
Legal Assistance: The Division of Law will deploy a team of attorneys to provide real-time legal guidance to county election officials, assisting in the resolution of election-related legal matters as they occur.
-
Voter Complaint Channels: Voters can report concerns through the Voting Rights Resources webpage, the Voter Information and Assistance line (1-877-NJVOTER), or directly to the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights via the NJ BIAS portal or 1-800-277-BIAS.
-
Enforcement of Protective Zones: The state reiterated the 100-foot “protective zone” surrounding polling places, within which solicitation and electioneering are prohibited. Enforcement will primarily be managed by poll site officials, with law enforcement present only when necessary.
-
Monitoring for Misconduct: The Office of Public Integrity and Accountability will oversee reports of voter intimidation, electioneering, and fraud, referring cases to local and federal authorities as appropriate.
-
Cybersecurity and Physical Security: The New Jersey Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Cell will monitor election infrastructure for cyber and physical threats to maintain the integrity of voting systems.
An updated Attorney General’s Guidance on the Role of Law Enforcement in Election Activities, issued in October 2024, ensures that officers across the state are fully informed about laws protecting voters from intimidation and their limited role in polling locations.
Additional resources, including county-level election office contacts and detailed voter information, are available through the New Jersey Division of Elections website.
The measures reflect the state’s broader commitment to ensuring that every eligible voter in New Jersey can cast their ballot freely, fairly, and without interference during the primary election cycle.
