State Officials Warn of Phishing Scam Targeting New Jersey Taxpayers
Residents are urged to delete suspicious text messages claiming to be from the Division of Taxation, which has confirmed it does not communicate with taxpayers via text.
The New Jersey Division of Taxation has issued a warning about a wave of phishing text messages being sent to residents. These fraudulent texts appear to originate from the Division and often reference tax-related matters, urging recipients to click links or provide personal information.
According to officials, the messages are not legitimate and are not connected to the Division of Taxation. The agency emphasized that it never uses text messaging to contact taxpayers regarding accounts, refunds, or other official business.
Residents who receive such texts are advised to take the following precautions:
-
Do not respond to the sender.
-
Do not click any links included in the message.
-
Delete the message immediately to avoid accidental interaction.
The Division of Taxation has reiterated that cybersecurity and the protection of taxpayer information remain top priorities for the state. More information and official guidance can be found on the Division’s website at www.nj.gov/treasury/taxation.
Phishing scams remain a persistent concern in New Jersey, where bad actors often attempt to exploit official-sounding messages to obtain sensitive financial or personal information. State officials continue to encourage vigilance among residents and recommend reporting suspicious communications to appropriate authorities.
