The NJ Guitar Summit returns, featuring workshops with Three Guitar Masters

The second New Jersey Guitar Summit will present a day of in-depth workshops for acoustic guitar players of all levels on Saturday, October 4, beginning at 10:00 am at the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Rd., Morristown. This year’s instructors are internationally renowned guitarists Beppe Gambetta, Tony McManus, and Jefferson Hamer.

The event will feature Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced tracks of classes. Each instructor will introduce the styles they teach, starting with examples from the founders of the style, and then moving on to their own musical visions and creative work. The program will delve into specific songs or pieces. Participants will learn specific techniques, exercises for both hands, warm-ups, scales, chords, and licks.

Flatpick master Beppe Gambetta is an expert at many styles ranging from Doc Watson to Moravian folk music and beyond. He uses the music of the great masters to open the door to creativity in arranging, adapting, and composing with the guitar. Gambetta is known for flashy licks, intricate cross-picking patterns, open tunings, and fluid slides up and down the fretboard. Born in Genova, Italy, he has served as a bluegrass ambassador all over the world, and has performed with a Who’s Who of legends, including Norman Blake, Mike Marshall, David Grisman, Charles Sawtelle, John Jorgenson, David Grier, Tony Trischka, and Dan Crary.

Fingerstyle master Tony McManus teaches Celtic guitar, with its embellishments, techniques, and open tunings. His playing draws on traditions from the entire Celtic diaspora – Scotland, Ireland, Brittany, Galicia, Asturias, Cape Breton, and Quebec. Long applauded for his uncanny ability to transpose traditional bagpipe or fiddle tunes onto his own six strings, McManus is increasingly being acknowledged also as a pioneering figure in bridging the realms of Celtic music and other genres. Guitar Player magazine listed him among “50 of the best acoustic guitarists of all time.”

Songwriter and arranger Jefferson Hamer will teach guitar from the viewpoint of the songwriter, arranger, and producer. He comes from the worlds of original Americana music, electric and acoustic folk, and traditional Irish music, and he has been both a sideperson and an album producer. He is best known for his collaborations with Anais Mitchell, Sarah Jarosz, Session Americana, and others. Perhaps his most enduring collaboration is The Murphy Beds, a harmony-rich folk duo with Irish musician and songwriter Eamon O’Leary.

The day will end with a jam session and then an evening concert featuring the three instructors. The concert will also be open to the public.
