Morristown’s iconic landmark to welcome visitors again starting October 5, with guided tours showcasing its recent upgrades.

MORRISTOWN, N.J. - Morristown National Historical Park is excited to announce the reopening of the historic Ford Mansion on Saturday, October 5, 2024, following nearly ten months of careful restoration. This National Landmark property, once the winter headquarters of George Washington, now boasts several enhancements designed to preserve its historical integrity and enrich visitor experience.

The restoration work included a fresh coat of exterior paint, the restoration of the mansion's original windows, and the repointing of its foundation in select areas. New ultra-violet protective film has been added to each windowpane to help preserve the interior, and new period-appropriate draperies now adorn the mansion's rooms. Adding a unique touch to the visitor experience, the mansion also features new silhouettes of historic figures, offering a creative glimpse into its storied past.

Acting Superintendent Jude Pfister said, “We are happy to be able to share the restored mansion with the visiting public after such an extensive restoration. While there is work continuing on the Ford Mansion grounds, the mansion house itself is ready."

Ranger-guided tours will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for up to 20 people per tour. The 45-minute tours will be offered at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m., with check-in at the Washington’s Headquarters Museum. Visitors can inquire with the ranger at the museum desk to join a tour.

The park extends its thanks to everyone who contributed to the restoration efforts and appreciates the patience of the community during the past ten months. These updates are part of the park’s ongoing preparations for upcoming historical anniversaries, ensuring the mansion continues to be an important educational and cultural site.
