The state experiences the largest population growth among northeastern states, rising to the 11th most populated state in the country.

NEW JERSEY STATE - New Jersey has kicked off 2025 by reaching the largest population in its history, surpassing 9.5 million residents, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau data. This marks a 1.3% increase since 2023—adding 121,209 new residents year over year—and cements New Jersey’s leading position for population growth in the Northeast. Since April 2020, New Jersey’s population has grown by 2.3%, adding 211,837 people over the past four years.

“We are incredibly proud to see that New Jersey is among the top 10 states for population growth,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “We are also thrilled to have reached our largest number of jobs and employers in Garden State history. This Census data is a testament to the important work being done each and every day across the Administration to support our workers and continue building a stronger, fairer New Jersey.”

  • Tenth Nationwide in Year-Over-Year Growth: Among all 50 states, New Jersey’s growth rate ranks within the top ten in the country.
  • Eleventh in Total U.S. Population: With 9,500,851 residents, New Jersey now holds the 11th spot for total population nationwide.

“With its dynamic business community, top-rated schools, and ideal location at the crossroads of the Northeast, New Jersey has become and remains an attractive place to build a future,” said State Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio.

Jobs and Employer Growth

According to November 2024 figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the state hit another milestone with 4,391,600 jobs—the largest number to date. The BLS Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages reported 284,200 employers as of September 30, 2024, reflecting the state’s strong economic and business environment.

“We currently have more jobs and employers than at any other time in the Garden State’s history,” said Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo. “We're proud that over 9.5 million people now call the Garden State home, and our total number of jobs is 4.4 million strong and growing. We also have the largest number of employers in our state’s history."

Broader Implications

New Jersey’s considerable population surge and robust job market highlight its appeal to families, working professionals, retirees, and growing businesses. The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development continues to support the state’s expanding workforce with training, job placement, and labor initiatives.

“New Jersey’s robust growth demonstrates the state's wide appeal as a vibrant place to live for families, working professionals, retirees and growing businesses,” the NJ Department of Labor & Workforce noted in a recent statement.

Coming Data Releases

Local observers anticipate additional insights in March 2025, when the U.S. Census Bureau is slated to release County Population Estimates, offering a closer look at demographic shifts within specific regions of the Garden State. With strong numbers across multiple key metrics, New Jersey appears well-positioned to maintain its upward trajectory in both population and economic strength.
