On May 13, 2025, Netflix officially broke ground on its highly anticipated production facility at Fort Monmouth, launching a $1 billion redevelopment project that aims to transform the historic U.S. Army base into a premier film and television hub for the East Coast. The 292-acre property, located in Eatontown and Oceanport, Monmouth County, is set to become one of the largest and most advanced production sites in the region.
The development, known as Netflix Studios Fort Monmouth, will include 12 cutting-edge soundstages totaling nearly 500,000 square feet, alongside dedicated areas for production support and community use. Demolition work is expected to last approximately 13 months, with the studio projected to open in 2028, pending final regulatory approvals.
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, who spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony, emphasized the project’s economic and cultural potential.
“We estimate that these studios will create thousands of jobs for New Jersey residents, billions of dollars in economic output, and many other cultural benefits to the region and state,” said Sarandos.
He noted Netflix's broader impact, stating the company has contributed $125 billion to the U.S. economy over the past four years and employed over 140,000 cast and crew members.
Joining Sarandos at the ceremony was New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, who heralded the project as a transformative milestone for the state’s creative economy.
“As the birthplace of the motion picture industry, New Jersey couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome Netflix — a name synonymous with 21st century entertainment — to the Garden State,” said Governor Murphy. “The Netflix studio at Fort Monmouth further solidifies New Jersey’s reputation as a global leader in film and television production, attracting some of the world’s top filmmakers and creators to the state. We are grateful to Netflix for choosing New Jersey as its new home on the East Coast and for committing to an investment that will fuel economic growth, generate thousands of new jobs, and bring more patrons to our local businesses.”
Local leaders, including Eatontown Mayor Anthony Talerico Jr., Oceanport Mayor Thomas J. Tvrdik, Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, Senators Vin Gopal and Declan O'Scanlon Jr., and Monmouth County Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone, also expressed strong support. First Lady Tammy Murphy highlighted the broader impact, stating the facility will provide “lasting benefits for the residents of our state for many years to come.”
The Fort Monmouth redevelopment follows Netflix’s 2022 acquisition announcement and is expected to revitalize a site that has been largely vacant for more than a decade. The project will create both permanent production jobs and temporary construction positions, helping to bolster local employment.
In preparation for construction, Netflix has engaged with the community by hosting supplier networking events and sponsoring local initiatives, including the Count Basie Breakthrough Filmmaker Festival and Veterans Day events in partnership with Soldier On and JBJ Soul Kitchen.
With this project, New Jersey strengthens its positioning as a rising center for film and television production. Netflix’s investment underscores the state’s appeal to major entertainment companies and reflects ongoing efforts to stimulate the creative economy through strategic public-private partnerships.
Further approvals are required before full-scale construction can commence. Once complete, Netflix Studios Fort Monmouth will anchor a vibrant new production ecosystem in the region.
