Morris-Essex Line NJ Transit Performance Record

Since January 2017, the Morris-Essex line of New Jersey Transit has aimed for a goal of 94.7% of on-time arrival and departures.

In February 2018, April to June 2020, September 2020, January 2021, and April 2021, the Morris-Essex Line of NJ Transit reported an on-time arrival percentage at or above NJTs goal.

Every month of the year NJT reports the on-time arrivals and departures of each of their rail lines. Since 2017, only seven times (out of the 61 months counted since Jan 2017) has the M&E line met or exceeded their on-time arrival/departure rate.

The M&E Line meets or exceeds the monthly on-time arrival and departure rate of 94.7% only 11.48% of the time. On average, the M&E Line will meet or exceed the on-time arrival/departure goal 1 month a year.

To account for minor variations in service, trains operating within 6 minutes of published schedules are considered on time. Overall, NJT reports the Morris & Essex NJT Line has an on-time performance rate of 91.1% as of January 2022.

January 20202 saw 3,690 trips on the M&E Line, 3.4% (or 125) of trips were canceled, and 5.5% (or 202) of trips arrived or departed over six minutes beyond the scheduled arrival or departure time.

The biggest factor affecting cancellations for the M&E Line in January 2022 was crew and engineer availability.

44% of cancellations (55 trips) were canceled due to a lack of crew members and engineers.

The next biggest factor impacting M&E Line cancelations in January 2022 was mechanical issues that cause 22.4% (28) of January 2022 cancellations.

Analysis of the top reasons for cancellations reveals staffing shortages and infrastructure problems as the biggest roadblock to eliminating cancelations and delays.

Of all cancellations in January, only 12.8% (16 out of 125 canceled trips) were unpreventable. If the M&E Line were running as efficiently as realistically possible, the lines cancellation rate would be near that 12.8% figure.

The point:

  • Over 87% of canceled M&E Line trips are preventable.
  • NJ Transit's M&E Line meets its monthly on-time arrival/departure rate (94.7%) only 11% of the time, or 1 out of every 12 months
