NJ Transit Commits to Newark with New Headquarters Lease

A new 25-year lease in Two Gateway Center marks a modern upgrade for NJ Transit operations, ensuring a strong presence in Newark for the coming years.

NEWARK, NJ – July 18, 2023 – After a competitive procurement process and receiving the unanimous approval of its Board of Directors, NJ Transit has affirmed its dedication to Newark and its statewide customers by signing a 25-year lease for new headquarters. The modern office space will be situated in Two Gateway Center, providing direct pedestrian access to Newark Penn Station, the busiest intermodal transit hub in the state.

Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti, the New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner and Chair of the NJ Transit Board, said the new facility will enhance efficiency and foster collaboration among the agency's employees who operate the transit system.

Kevin S. Corbett, NJ Transit's President & CEO, affirmed the agency's commitment to Newark, its home for over 40 years. The new lease agreement promises a modern work environment to effectively operate the nation's largest statewide transit system while ensuring excellent value for New Jersey's taxpayers, customers, and employees.

NJ Transit's current headquarters, Penn Plaza East, requires extensive renovations estimated at $120 million over the next six years, including the replacement of elevators, HVAC systems, and other systems. The renovation would cause significant disruption to the work environment and transit system management.

The 25-year lease at Two Gateway comprises approximately 407,000 square feet of open floor space, tailored to NJ Transit's needs. The newly renovated Two Gateway Center offers the potential to expand or contract the agency's footprint as required.

The new location provides direct access to Newark Penn Station through the Gateway Center's pedestrian bridge. The Murphy Administration has pledged over $190 million towards the renovation and restoration of Newark Penn Station to serve as a grand entryway to New Jersey.

Onyx Equities, the owner of Two Gateway, will provide approximately $53 million towards design and construction to meet NJ Transit's needs and create a modern, productive workspace. This updated workspace aims to attract and retain professional staff, allowing for the consolidation of administrative employees from various locations statewide.

NJ Transit is expected to move to the new headquarters in Two Gateway Center by the end of 2024. The future of the current Penn Plaza facility is yet to be determined.
