Grand Opening of Freedom Village at Hamilton Woods Marks a New Era in Accessible Housing
The New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency (NJHMFA) unveils transformative housing development, providing inclusive living spaces for Hamilton's disabled community.
HAMILTON TWP, NJ - The ribbon was cut, heralding a new era for accessible housing in Hamilton Township. Freedom Village at Hamilton Woods, a $14 million housing development, was officially opened, offering 72 barrier-free apartments for low- and moderate-income individuals, emphasizing support for those with disabilities.
In a landmark move to empower residents with disabilities to live independently, the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency (NJHMFA), in collaboration with Project Freedom, has announced the grand opening of Freedom Village at Hamilton Woods. This significant milestone in housing development provides permanent accessible homes coupled with supportive services, ensuring a vibrant and inclusive community in Hamilton.
Barrier-Free Living
The Hamilton Woods offers barrier-free living in all apartments, making it accessible to wheelchair users. With rents starting at $882 per month, this development is tailored to cater to low- and moderate-income individuals, enhancing their sense of belonging and home. On-site social service coordinators from Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark will augment the residents' support network.
Praise and Gratitude
Donna Spencer, NJHMFA’s Director of Multifamily and Supported Housing and Lending, praised all those involved during the ribbon-cutting ceremony, with special acknowledgment to Mayor Jeff Martin, the Township of Hamilton, and Project Freedom.
"At NJHMFA, we are firmly committed to providing supportive housing to ensure that everyone has a safe, quality, and affordable home regardless of disability status," Donna Spencer stated. “It is our expectation that Project Freedom’s second Hamilton project will prove just as successful as their first.”
Funding and Collaboration
The successful realization of Hamilton Woods was fueled by nearly $14 million through 9% Low-Income Housing Tax Credits, and an additional $1.2 million from NJHMFA's Special Needs Housing Trust Fund.
Hamilton Woods stands out with its 72 units, including one, two, and three-bedroom apartments. A quarter of these units are designated for individuals with developmental disabilities or mental illnesses, thereby fostering equal housing opportunities.
Location and Amenities
Strategically located near the township's "Center City" district, Hamilton Woods provides residents with easy access to various amenities like Capital Health clinic, Hamilton Area YMCA, and the Hamilton Library.
“Hamilton is proud to host a second Project Freedom development,” commented Mayor Jeff Martin. “Project Freedom’s commitment to affordable, barrier-free housing is second-to-none.”
Project Freedom’s Legacy
Project Freedom’s record in building supportive housing has led to the creation of over 750 affordable homes across five counties, empowering tenants with disabilities to live independently.
Tracee Battis, Executive Director of Project Freedom, expressed gratitude to Mayor Jeff Martin, Hamilton Township, NJHMFA, Mercer County, TD Bank, and National Equity Fund for their continued support.
Freedom Village’s Success & How to Apply
The Freedom Village concept has been successful in various locations, providing homes that cater to residents with disabilities, particularly amidst the affordable housing crisis. Hamilton Woods' nearly 600 applications underscore the urgent need for such accommodations.
"On behalf of NJHMFA, I would like to thank everyone who played a part in bringing this project to fruition," NJHFMA Executive Director Melanie R. Walter said. "Hamilton Woods offers modern, inclusive, accessible housing that will enhance resident access to and participation in the Hamilton Township community.”
The ribbon-cutting ceremony marked a historic step towards inclusive and supportive communities, reflecting the success that collaboration and shared vision can yield.
