Road & Lane Closures, Emergency Construction & Heavy Traffic

Full lane closures and heavy delays reported as emergency and scheduled construction projects impact major Morris County roadways.

As of 7:26 a.m. on April 9, all lanes of Interstate 80 in both directions were closed at Exit 34 (NJ Route 15) in Wharton due to emergency construction for the sinkhole issue that is ongoing. Traffic is being detoured in the area, and no estimated time for reopening has been provided.

This emergency closure is causing significant congestion, particularly on the eastbound side of I-80. By 10:09 a.m., traffic was reported to be heavy from east of Exit 30 (Howard Boulevard in Roxbury Township) to just west of the closure at Exit 34. Current travel times through the affected area are reported to be a minimum of 15 minutes, but delays are subject to increase during peak hours.

In addition to the emergency work, multiple scheduled construction projects are underway across Morris County and surrounding areas, contributing to traffic disruptions throughout the region.

Key ongoing construction projects include:

  • US Route 46 (Montville Township): Eastbound right lane near NJ 159/Bloomfield Avenue closed until 2:00 p.m.

  • US Route 202 (Montville Township): Southbound right lane closed south of I-287 until 3:00 p.m.

  • Interstate 287 (Montville Township): Northbound left lane closed between Exit 47 and US 202 until 3:00 p.m.

  • US Route 46 (Parsippany-Troy Hills): Multiple closures on both eastbound and westbound lanes near I-287, Beverwyck Road, Cherry Hill Road, and Bloomfield Avenue affecting lanes and shoulders until 3:00 p.m.

  • NJ Route 23 (Pequannock and Butler): Northbound and southbound right lanes closed in segments between Alexander Avenue and CR 618/Kinnelon Road/Keil Road. Northbound work continues until 4:00 p.m., southbound until 3:00 p.m.

  • Interstate 280 (Parsippany-Troy Hills): Eastbound right shoulder near I-80 closed until 3:00 p.m.

  • Interstate 287 (Hanover Township): Northbound right shoulder closed near Exit 39 (NJ 10) until 3:00 p.m.

Motorists are advised to use alternate routes where possible and to anticipate delays when traveling through the affected corridors. The New Jersey Department of Transportation has not released information about the nature of the emergency construction on I-80.

Drivers can monitor traffic conditions and detours via the NJDOT’s 511NJ service or traffic apps for real-time updates.
