Attorney General Provides Update on Fatal Police Shooting in Woodbridge
Karl Gregory, 46, died during an exchange of gunfire with police officers at a hotel on June 13, 2024; two officers were injured and have since recovered.
WOODBRIDGE, N.J. — The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office has released police body-worn camera footage from a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred on June 13, 2024, at the Royal Albert’s Palace Hotel in Woodbridge. The deceased has been identified as Karl Gregory, a 46-year-old resident of New York, New York.
The release of video from three officers’ body cameras follows policy established in 2019 to promote transparency and public accountability in investigations involving fatalities during police encounters. The case remains under active review by the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA), a division of the Attorney General’s Office responsible for independently investigating deaths involving law enforcement. Gregory’s family was given an opportunity to view the recordings before they were made public.
Background of the Incident
According to preliminary findings, the incident originated on June 12, 2024, when the Edison Police Department received an alert from an automated license plate reader that a vehicle sought in connection with a New York City shooting—which had left one person critically injured—was in the area.
The vehicle, which was unoccupied, was located later that evening by officers from the Edison and Woodbridge Police Departments in the parking lot of the Royal Albert’s Palace Hotel. Authorities then contacted the New York City Police Department (NYPD), and NYPD detectives arrived to brief local officers on the details of their investigation.
Fatal Encounter and Shooting
Shortly after midnight, at approximately 12:21 a.m. on June 13, as law enforcement officers were present in the hotel lobby and interviewing a civilian, Mr. Gregory exited an elevator carrying several bags. Upon seeing law enforcement personnel, he dropped the bags and reached into a black backpack, according to the Attorney General’s Office.
At that moment, gunfire was exchanged between Mr. Gregory and Woodbridge Officers Drew Krupinski and Justin Nerney, as well as NYPD Detective Matthew Mauro. Gregory, Officer Nerney, and Detective Mauro were all struck during the exchange. Gregory was provided emergency medical care by Woodbridge officers on the scene until EMS arrived, but he was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter. A handgun was recovered near his body.
Officer Nerney and Detective Mauro were treated for their injuries and have since been released from the hospital.
Ongoing Investigation and Legal Requirements
The incident is subject to mandatory investigation under New Jersey law N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), which requires the Attorney General’s Office to investigate any death resulting from an encounter with law enforcement officers acting in their official capacity. These investigations must be presented to a state grand jury, which will determine whether criminal charges are warranted against any officers involved.
No charges have been filed at this time, and no further information has been released, pending the completion of the investigation.
