Eight New Jersey Employers Added to Labor Violation 'WALL'; Owe Over $540K
State bars listed businesses from public contracting until full repayment of liabilities; total owed across all 'WALL' postings exceeds $26 million
TRENTON, N.J. — The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (NJDOL) has added eight more businesses to its Workplace Accountability in Labor List (known as “The WALL”) in July, bringing the total number of non-compliant employers to 280 since the initiative’s launch in September 2023. These businesses are now barred from receiving public contracts at any state, county, or municipal level until they resolve outstanding wage, benefit, and tax liabilities.
The newly listed employers collectively owe $540,531.92 in unpaid wages, penalties, and fines—some stemming from violations of workers’ compensation requirements, and others from wage and hour laws. In addition to the July additions, one business, Building Materials Manufacturing LLC of Parsippany, was added in June for violations of the New Jersey Gross Income Tax Act, owing $71,724.10. Another business was removed from the list during the same month after settling its outstanding obligations.
NJDOL reports that the 280 employers currently on The WALL owe a combined total of $26 million, either to workers or to the State of New Jersey. Since the program began, the department has recovered $650,863.53 in payments from businesses posted to or warned about their potential inclusion on the list.
The WALL was created through bipartisan legislation (S-4226) passed in 2020 as part of a broader initiative to combat wage theft and misclassification of workers. It serves as a public enforcement mechanism that complements other accountability measures such as public contractor debarment and business license suspension. Procurement officers are required to consult The WALL before awarding government contracts.
Employers receive advance written notification from NJDOL and are given 20 days to pay their liabilities or contest their listing. The WALL’s website recently received enhancements to improve accessibility, including a searchable directory of posted businesses and dates of their listing.
