Traffic Delays and Lane Closures Reported Across North Jersey Highways and Bridges

Midday congestion continues on I-78 and the George Washington Bridge, with extensive construction causing lane and shoulder closures across major routes through the region.

NORTH JERSEY - As of Monday afternoon, September 15, several key highways and commuter routes across North Jersey, including those near Morristown, are experiencing moderate to heavy delays due to ongoing construction and standard traffic congestion.

I-78 in Union Township:

At 12:19 p.m., heavy traffic was reported on the eastbound local lanes of I-78 from Exit 50 (CR 630/Vaux Hall Road) to Exit 52 (Garden State Parkway). All lanes remain open, though delays persist. Contributing to the congestion is nearby construction activity:

  • Express lanes: Right lane closed near Exit 52 until 3:00 p.m.

  • Local lanes: Left lane closed near Exit 52 until 3:00 p.m.

George Washington Bridge – Fort Lee:

Traffic on both levels of the George Washington Bridge continues to experience delays eastbound from the New Jersey side into New York. As of 12:09 p.m., travel times via I-95 from I-80 to the Alexander Hamilton Bridge stood at approximately 20 minutes:

  • Upper Level: All lanes open, but delays ongoing.

  • Lower Level: All lanes open, with similar delays.

  • Construction impacts:

    • One right lane closed on the lower level eastbound until 3:30 p.m.

    • One right lane closed on the upper level eastbound until 4:30 p.m.

Garden State Parkway – Bloomfield:

As of 11:21 a.m., northbound traffic is delayed from south of Exit 149 (CR 506) to south of the Essex Toll Plaza. All lanes are open, with an estimated 1.5-mile backup.

New Jersey Turnpike and Extensions:

Several segments of the Turnpike and its extensions are impacted by roadwork:

  • Hudson County Extension (Bayonne): Partial ramp closure at Interchange 14A for repairs until 3:00 p.m.

  • Western Spur (East Rutherford): Partial ramp closure at Interchange 16W – NJ 3 until 3:00 p.m.

  • Outer roadway (Elizabeth): Ramp closure at Interchange 13A – Newark Liberty International Airport/US 1&9.

I-280 – Kearny:

Construction continues in both directions near CR 508. As of 10:00 a.m., the left lane is closed eastbound and westbound until 3:00 p.m. Additionally, the right shoulder remains closed in the westbound direction until 5:00 p.m.

NJ 23 – Sussex, Butler, and Pequannock:

Multiple segments of NJ 23 are under construction:

  • Northbound near CR 643/Mill St (Sussex): Right shoulder closed until 2:00 p.m.

  • Southbound from Butler to Pequannock Twp: Right lane closed until 3:00 p.m.

  • Northbound from Pequannock to Butler: Right lane closed until 4:00 p.m.

US 46 – Widespread Activity:

Construction along US 46 is ongoing across several municipalities, with closures in both directions:

  • Westbound: Ridgefield Park to South Hackensack (right lane closed), Mount Olive (right lane closed), and from I-80 to Rockaway (right shoulder closed) until 3:00 p.m.

  • Eastbound: Rockaway to Denville, Knowlton Twp, and Hasbrouck Heights all reporting shoulder or lane closures until 3:00–4:30 p.m.

NJ 17 – Paramus, Rutherford, Hasbrouck Heights:

Numerous shoulder closures are in effect in both directions throughout the day, with all restrictions expected to continue until at least 3:00 or 5:00 p.m.

Other Notable Construction Zones:

  • I-287 (Parsippany-Troy Hills, Montville, Oakland, Mahwah): Multiple right shoulder closures in both directions until afternoon hours.

  • I-80 (Woodland Park): Eastbound Exit 56B ramp remains fully closed until 3:00 p.m. on November 18, 2025.

  • Port Area (Newark): Long-term construction on Corbin Street, Port Street, and Inner Port Street continues through December 2025, with full lane closures and detours in place.

Motorists are advised to check real-time traffic updates and plan alternate routes if traveling through these impacted corridors. All construction schedules are weather-permitting and subject to change.
