New Jersey Permanently Revokes Medical License of Physician Over Misconduct Allegations

Dr. John R. McGee is permanently barred from practicing medicine in New Jersey following a series of professional misconduct findings and prior disciplinary actions.

The New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners has permanently revoked the medical license of Dr. John R. McGee, citing multiple instances of professional misconduct and prior disciplinary action, according to a joint announcement by Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin and the Division of Consumer Affairs.

The license revocation was finalized through a Final Consent Order filed on September 9, following allegations that Dr. McGee, formerly licensed in New Jersey, engaged in several violations of medical ethics and law. These included:

  • Maintaining an inappropriate relationship with a patient

  • Failing to meet the standard of care in the operation of multiple medical spas

  • Improperly prescribing controlled dangerous substances (CDS) using prescription pads belonging to other physicians

  • Indiscriminately prescribing and compounding weight management drugs, such as semaglutide

“New Jerseyans deserve to know that their healthcare providers meet the highest standards of professionalism and integrity,” said Attorney General Platkin. “This permanent revocation ensures that this physician can no longer endanger patients or compromise public trust in the medical profession.”

Dr. McGee also faced disciplinary action in California, where his license was revoked earlier this year after he allegedly misrepresented the status of his New Jersey license on sworn documents submitted to that state's medical board. The New Jersey Board determined that this out-of-state disciplinary history, combined with the misconduct allegations in New Jersey, justified permanent revocation of his license to practice medicine and surgery in the state.

This is not Dr. McGee’s first disciplinary issue. In August 2016, the New Jersey Board had suspended his license for five years—including one year of active suspension—and imposed a permanent prohibition on prescribing human growth hormone and controlled dangerous substances.

Under the new Final Consent Order, Dr. McGee has formally surrendered his license with prejudice, meaning he is permanently prohibited from reapplying for a medical license in New Jersey. The terms of the order also mandate that Dr. McGee:

  • Cease all contact with patients

  • Stop billing or receiving payment for medical services performed by others in New Jersey

  • Notify all current and former patients about how to access their medical records

  • Refrain from supervising, managing, or influencing any aspect of medical practice in the state

The State was represented in this matter by Deputy Attorney General Daniel Evan Leef Hewitt, under the supervision of Section Chief Doreen A. Hafner of the Professional Boards Prosecution Section, within the Affirmative Civil Enforcement Practice Group of the Division of Law. The investigation was conducted by the Enforcement Bureau within the Division of Consumer Affairs.

“The Board’s decision reflects its ongoing commitment to protecting the health, safety, and welfare of patients,” said Elizabeth Harris, Acting Director of the Division of Consumer Affairs. “Physicians who engage in serious misconduct or disregard the rules governing medical practice will be held accountable.”

Patients who believe they have received inappropriate care from any licensed medical professional in New Jersey are encouraged to file a complaint online at the Division of Consumer Affairs website or contact the Division at 1-800-242-5846 (toll-free in New Jersey) or 973-504-6200.

The revocation of Dr. McGee’s license is part of the state’s broader efforts to protect public health and maintain trust in the medical profession. Disciplinary actions by the Board of Medical Examiners are governed by the New Jersey Medical Practice Act, which allows for license revocation when a physician is found to have engaged in unethical, illegal, or unsafe practices.
