Crash and Widespread Roadwork Slow Traffic Across North Jersey

A crash on the NJ Turnpike’s Eastern Spur and over 30 active construction zones are causing delays, lane closures, and detours across major highways including I-80, I-287, US 46, and NJ 3.

Motorists traveling through North Jersey today are facing significant traffic disruptions due to an accident on the New Jersey Turnpike's Eastern Spur and a broad array of scheduled construction and roadwork projects affecting key transit corridors.

Crash Reported on NJ Turnpike - Eastern Spur

As of 1:22 p.m., a crash was reported on the New Jersey Turnpike’s Eastern Spur northbound, just south of Interchange 15W near I-280 in Kearny. While all lanes remain open, the involved vehicles are situated on the right shoulder. Drivers in the area should expect residual delays due to rubbernecking and emergency response activity.

Major Construction Projects Across the Region

Multiple construction and maintenance efforts are impacting travel along several critical highways throughout the region, including in and around Morris County:

  • George Washington Bridge (Fort Lee): Eastbound traffic on both the lower and upper levels is reduced to one right lane. The lower level lane closure remains in effect until 3:30 p.m., and the upper level closure continues until 4:30 p.m.

  • I-287 (Harding Twp & Montville Twp): On the northbound side near Exit 33 (Harter Rd/US 202), the right shoulder is closed until 3:00 p.m. Southbound near Exit 47, the left shoulder is closed until 2:30 p.m.

  • I-80 (Multiple Municipalities): Lane closures are ongoing in Fairfield Twp (westbound near Exit 47A), Rockaway Twp (eastbound near Exit 35 and westbound near Exit 34), and Mount Olive Twp. Additional work near Exit 56B in Woodland Park is closing ramp access until November 18.

  • US 46 (Parsippany, Rockaway, Mount Olive, and others): Left or right lane and shoulder closures are affecting both eastbound and westbound traffic, with some sections detoured or partially shut down through 3:00 p.m. and beyond.

  • NJ 3 (Rutherford and East Rutherford): Construction has closed left lanes and shoulders in both directions between NJ 17 and the Turnpike spur. Work is expected to last into the early morning hours of November 15.

  • NJ 23 and NJ 57: Intermittent right lane closures are ongoing through Butler, Wantage Twp, and Franklin Twp with scheduled wrap-ups by mid-afternoon.

  • US 202 (Harding Twp): Right shoulders are closed in both directions near CR 646/Tempe Wick Road until 3:00 p.m.

Additional Closures and Detours in Urban Areas

Major infrastructure projects in Jersey City and Newark continue to impact local and commercial traffic:

  • Marin Blvd (Jersey City to Hoboken): All lanes are closed between 18th Street and CR-636 (Observer Highway).

  • Port, Inner Port, and Corbin Streets (Newark): Widespread closures and lane restrictions are in effect through December 2025, with detours posted along Marlin Street.

Travel Advisory for Local Residents

Drivers in Morris County and surrounding areas are advised to check for real-time updates, especially if traveling near construction zones or major interchanges. Alternate routes and extended travel times may be necessary as crews continue roadway improvements and maintenance operations. Most projects are expected to conclude by mid-to-late afternoon, with a few long-term efforts extending into late 2025.
