Cargo Spill, Disabled Truck, Construction and Delays Disrupt Traffic in North Jersey
Morning congestion worsened by a cargo spill on US 1&9 and a disabled truck on NJ 21, as lane closures and delays extend across major highways due to ongoing construction and heavy traffic volume.
A cargo spill and a disabled truck in Newark disrupted morning traffic flow on Monday, November 10, adding to widespread delays already affecting commuters across North Jersey due to heavy congestion and ongoing construction projects.
At midday, a cargo spill on US 1&9 northbound at Haynes Avenue in Newark led to the closure of two of three northbound lanes, significantly impeding travel near Newark Liberty International Airport and Port Newark. The cause of the spill and cleanup timeline were not immediately disclosed.
Earlier in the day, a disabled truck blocked the right lane of NJ 21 southbound at East 3rd Avenue, also in Newark. The incident reduced traffic to two lanes in a key corridor linking downtown Newark with surrounding highways and neighborhoods.
In addition to these incidents, the New Jersey Turnpike experienced multiple delays due to volume-related congestion:
-
Western Spur northbound: Delays extended two miles from the Southern Mixing Bowl to just south of Interchange 15W (I-280) in Newark.
-
Eastern Spur northbound: A two-mile backup was reported from north of the Southern Mixing Bowl in Newark to south of Interchange 15W in Kearny.
-
Eastern Spur southbound: A more significant four-mile delay was observed from south of Interchange 16E (NJ 3/Lincoln Tunnel) in Secaucus to south of Interchange 15W in Newark.
-
Western Spur southbound: Also saw a four-mile delay stretching from south of Interchange 16W (NJ 3) in Rutherford to south of Interchange 15W in Newark.
Construction continues to affect key regional arteries, with numerous active work zones:
-
I-287 southbound between Exit 41 (I-80) in Parsippany-Troy Hills and Exit 34 in Morris Township has a left lane closure.
-
NJ 23 southbound from Butler to Pequannock and NJ 23 northbound from Pequannock to Butler both have lane closures lasting until 4:00 p.m., depending on location.
-
US 46, I-80, and NJ 15 are among several highways in Morris County experiencing shoulder and lane closures, contributing to slower travel times.
-
Major detours in Newark's port area remain in effect due to long-term construction on Corbin Street, Inner Port Street, and Port Street, with closures expected to last through December 2025.
An emergency maintenance operation is also underway on the Garden State Parkway southbound just south of Exit 144 (CR 510) in Irvington Township, with the right shoulder closed for repairs.
Commuters are advised to check real-time traffic updates and consider alternate routes where possible. Authorities have not provided estimated clearance times for the cargo spill or disabled vehicle.
