Widespread Roadwork and Lane Closures Impact Major NJ Highways

Motorists across northern New Jersey face extended delays and detours due to construction, maintenance, and emergency repairs on key regional roadways.

MORRISTOWN, NJ — Commuters across northern New Jersey are encountering significant disruptions today, November 13, due to extensive road construction, emergency maintenance, and lane closures on major highways and thoroughfares. Multiple closures, spanning from Sussex to Hudson County, are expected to impact traffic flows through late afternoon and beyond.

According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) and Turnpike Authority reports, key affected roadways include:

I-80 Corridor

  • Wharton to Denville Twp: Eastbound and westbound shoulders are closed near Exit 34 (NJ 15) and between Parsippany and Denville.

  • Woodland Park: The Exit 56B ramp to Squirrelwood Road is fully closed until 3:00 PM on November 18, affecting local access and creating backlogs on feeder roads.

US Route 46

  • Parsippany-Troy Hills to Mountain Lakes: Both eastbound and westbound directions are experiencing left or right lane closures near CR 618, Cherry Hill Road, and US 202.

  • Rockaway Twp to Denville: Shoulder closures are in effect until 3:00 PM.

Route 23

  • Butler to Pequannock: Multiple construction zones have closed the northbound right lane in sections stretching past CR 511 and CR 618. Southbound traffic is also reduced to one lane in Pequannock.

  • Additional Butler Section: Right lane closures remain until 2:00 PM north of CR 511.

I-287 and NJ 24

  • Montville to Oakland (I-287 South): Right lane closed near Exit 58 and south of Exit 52 until 2:00 PM.

  • Chatham and Millburn (NJ 24 West): Left lane closures from Summit Avenue to JFK Parkway until 2:00 PM.

Emergency Maintenance

  • Garden State Parkway: The southbound right shoulder is closed near Exit 154 (US 46, Clifton) until further notice.

Turnpike and Extension Work

  • Hudson County Extension: One left lane is closed eastbound near the Holland Tunnel approach in Jersey City.

  • Western Spur (Interchange 15W, Kearny): Southbound left lane is closed until 3:00 PM.

George Washington Bridge (Fort Lee)

  • Eastbound Lower Level: One left lane remains closed until 3:30 PM.

  • Eastbound Upper Level: One right lane is closed until 4:30 PM, contributing to delays heading into New York.

Localized Construction Zones

  • Corbin Street, Inner and Port Streets (Newark): Full closures remain in effect through December 2025, rerouting commercial and port traffic.

  • Marin Boulevard (Jersey City to Hoboken): Full closure from 18th Street to Observer Highway continues.

  • Paterson Plank Road (East Rutherford): Lane reductions in both directions remain until 2:00 PM near NJ 120.

Traffic Volumes

  • Route 17 Southbound (Maywood to Hasbrouck Heights): Moderate congestion reported due to volume, though all lanes remain open.

Motorists are advised to use alternate routes where possible and to allow for additional travel time. For up-to-date traffic conditions, consult 511NJ.org or local DOT alerts. Most lane restrictions are expected to lift by late afternoon, though several long-term projects are scheduled to continue into late 2025.
