Daytime Closures on I-287 in Morris County Through Spring 2028

Work tied to a $17.5 million Hanover Avenue bridge replacement will also bring weekday lane closures on the overpass through early stages of construction.

Daytime shoulder closures are scheduled to begin this week on Interstate 287 in both directions in Hanover and Morris Township as early work gets underway on a long-term bridge replacement project in Morris County, the New Jersey Department of Transportation announced.

Starting Thursday, Jan. 29, and continuing Friday, Jan. 30, shoulder closures will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on I-287 northbound and southbound between mileposts 37.26 and 37.56, near the Hanover Avenue/County Route 650 bridge. The same schedule is expected to continue Monday through Friday for several weeks.

In addition to the highway shoulder work, daytime lane closures are also planned on the Hanover Avenue/CR 650 bridge over I-287. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and on weekdays thereafter for the next several weeks, a single lane will be closed in each direction on the bridge.

According to NJDOT, the closures are necessary to clear snow, install construction signage, and conduct surveillance and preparatory work ahead of a full bridge replacement project. The work will be performed as a moving operation on both I-287 and Hanover Avenue, and motorists should expect slower travel through the area.

The project is part of a $17.5 million, federally funded effort to replace the concrete bridge deck on the Hanover Avenue/CR 650 bridge, which spans I-287 in Hanover and Morris Township. In addition to the deck replacement, the project includes drainage improvements, new lighting, updated signage and fencing, sidewalk replacements, and upgraded curb ramps to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

Construction is expected to continue through spring 2028. NJDOT noted that the precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other conditions.

Drivers traveling through the area are advised to slow down, use caution, and anticipate delays. Up-to-date construction information and real-time traffic conditions are available through NJDOT’s 511 travel information system.
