Northern NJ Traffic Report: Snow Removal, Construction, and Closures
Snow removal operations, a water main break, and widespread construction projects caused lane closures and detours across Northern New Jersey highways and local roads throughout Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026, impacting commuter travel during the morning and midday hours.
As of early afternoon Tuesday, transportation agencies reported dozens of active incidents across Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Union, and Sussex counties, with several major corridors experiencing reduced capacity.
Emergency-Related Impacts
Snow removal operations were underway on the Goethals Bridge eastbound from Elizabeth into New York City as of 10:19 a.m., where one right lane and the shoulder were closed.
Separately, a water main break on I-78 westbound express lanes just west of Exit 51 (Burnett Avenue) in Union Township resulted in a left shoulder closure reported shortly before 11 a.m.
Major Bridge and Turnpike Construction
Multiple construction projects affected traffic on the George Washington Bridge throughout the day. Both the upper and lower eastbound levels had right lane closures extending into the afternoon, while long-term ramp and roadway closures near Center Avenue in Fort Lee remain in effect through mid- to late 2026.
Roadwork also continued on the New Jersey Turnpike Hudson County Extension eastbound in Jersey City, where a right lane closure was reported near the Holland Tunnel approach.
Widespread Highway Lane Closures
Numerous state and federal highways experienced lane or shoulder closures due to scheduled construction, including:
-
I-78 in Newark, Union Township, and Summit
-
I-80 in Lodi, Teterboro, and Woodland Park
-
I-287 in Riverdale and Hanover Township
-
Routes 3, 4, 7, 10, 17, 22, 23, 46, 53, and 63 across multiple counties
Most of these closures involved single lanes or shoulders and were scheduled to remain in place until mid-afternoon, though several long-term projects extend into summer 2026.
Local Street Closures and Long-Term Detours
In Newark and Jersey City, full roadway closures were reported on Marin Boulevard, Inner Port Street, Corbin Street, and Port Street, with some detours expected to remain active through March 31, 2026. Additional long-term closures were noted in Fort Lee and Woodland Park, including full roadway shutdowns with posted detours.
What Drivers Should Know
Motorists were advised to expect delays, particularly near bridge crossings, major interchanges, and construction zones. Drivers were encouraged to allow extra travel time, follow posted detours, and check for updated conditions before heading out, especially as winter weather and infrastructure repairs continue to affect traffic patterns across the region.
This report reflects conditions as of early afternoon Tuesday and is subject to change as work progresses or incidents are cleared.
