Work part of resurfacing project nearing completion

New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced overnight lane closures this week as the Route 22 Broad Street to Route 27/Empire Street paving and resurfacing project nears completion in Hillside, Union County and Newark, Essex County.
Beginning at 9 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, December 20, until 6 a.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, December 21, and continuing Wednesday and Thursday nights during the same time, NJDOT’s contractor, Della Pello Paving, Inc. is scheduled to close the right lane on Route 22 in both directions between the Broad Street overpass in Hillside and the bridge over Empire Street in Newark to install guiderail.
At least one lane will be maintained in each direction overnight. For this reason expect potentially heavy traffic as the holiday season ramps up and travel spikes to an all-time high not seen since the start of the pandemic.
The resurfacing work is part of a $2 million federally-funded project to resurface Route 22 in both directions between Broad Street/CR623 to Route 27/Empire Street. In addition, guiderail and drainage structures are being upgraded. This project is expected to be complete in the spring 2023.
