Former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara appointed Special Counsel to ensure accountability in traffic enforcement controversy; alleged slowdown over an eight-month period may have coincided with an increase in crashes and fatalities.

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin has launched a comprehensive investigation into an alleged slowdown in State Police traffic enforcement that occurred from July 2023 to March 2024. Concerns have emerged that the slowdown coincided with an increase in roadway crashes and fatalities, raising alarm about its potential impact on public safety.

The Allegations and Investigation

The New Jersey State Police, long heralded for their dedication to public safety, are under scrutiny following claims of a deliberate reduction in traffic enforcement during the eight-month period. In a statement, Attorney General Platkin expressed disappointment over the potential harm to the State Police's reputation, citing the seriousness of the allegations.

“I am deeply disappointed that this well-deserved reputation for serving the public good has been tainted by the alleged and unprecedented slowdown in State Police traffic enforcement from approximately July 2023 to March 2024. I am particularly concerned that this slowdown may have coincided with increased crashes and fatalities on our roadways. I have ordered a full investigation into how this slowdown was orchestrated, which will ensure both accountability for those involved while also protecting against such conduct occurring again in the future. That investigation is well underway,” Platkin said.

In response, Platkin has appointed Preet Bharara, a former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, as Special Counsel to lead the investigation. Bharara, now a partner at WilmerHale, is renowned for his integrity and prosecutorial experience. His appointment underscores the gravity of the matter and the Attorney General's commitment to transparency and accountability.

Platkin emphasized that Bharara will have full investigative authority within the Attorney General's office while Platkin retains ultimate decision-making power.

“During the pendency of this investigation, I will ensure that the collaborative efforts between my office, the State Police, and other branches of our Department — which have produced the lowest levels of gun violence in State history, substantial reductions in auto thefts, and unprecedented efforts to combat human and drug trafficking, among other notable accomplishments — will continue unabated,” Platkin stated.

Despite this controversy, the State Police have been credited with significant accomplishments in reducing gun violence, auto thefts, and human and drug trafficking. Platkin vowed that these efforts would remain a priority.
