Federal prosecutors charge Newark-based network accused of distributing fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine across Essex and Union Counties.

A federal grand jury in the District of New Jersey has returned a 12-count indictment against three New Jersey men for their alleged involvement in a drug trafficking organization (DTO) operating in Essex and Union Counties, U.S. Attorney John Giordano announced. The indictment, unsealed yesterday, charges the suspects with conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine, among other serious offenses.

The three defendants—George Lopez, 50, of Newark; Reinaldo Cruz, 45, of Elizabeth; and Joel Hernandez, 28, of Parlin—are accused of trafficking significant quantities of narcotics, with some of the defendants also facing illegal firearms possession charges.

Federal and Local Investigation

The multi-agency investigation into the DTO involved wiretaps, mobile and fixed surveillance, controlled drug purchases, and analysis of telephone records. Law enforcement agencies tracked the DTO’s supply chain and distribution operations, leading to substantial drug and firearms seizures.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Eli Jacobs (Organized Crime and Gangs Unit) and John Mezzanotte (Economic Crimes Unit) of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey.

Law Enforcement Collaboration

The indictment results from a large-scale federal, state, and local law enforcement effort, including:

  • Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) – Newark
  • Union County Prosecutor’s Office
  • Elizabeth Police Department
  • Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) – Newark Field Division
  • Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) – Newark
  • Essex County Sheriff’s Department
  • New Jersey State Police SWAT Team
  • Newark Police Department
  • Hudson County Regional SWAT Team
  • U.S. Marshals Service
  • Cranford, Bloomfield, and Hudson County law enforcement agencies

The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. They are scheduled for initial court appearances in the coming weeks, where they will enter pleas and potentially face pretrial detention hearings.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the DTO’s broader network, and additional arrests or charges may follow.

This case underscores the ongoing threat posed by fentanyl and methamphetamine trafficking in New Jersey communities. Federal and state law enforcement agencies have reiterated their commitment to disrupting drug networks that contribute to overdose deaths and violence.

Residents with information about drug activity in their communities are encouraged to contact local law enforcement or the DEA tip line.

This remains a developing case, and updates will be provided as proceedings move forward.
