Vehicle Fire and Roadwork Spark Delays Across Morris County Corridors
Traffic disruptions span US 46, NJ 23, I-80, and I-287 due to ongoing construction and an active vehicle fire in Mount Olive.
MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — April 30, 2025 — Motorists across Morris County are facing significant travel delays today as a vehicle fire and extensive construction activities affect several major highways.
As of 2:12 p.m., a vehicle fire on US 46 westbound just west of Naughright Road in Mount Olive Township has resulted in the closure of the left lane of two available lanes. Emergency crews are on scene, and drivers are advised to expect delays in the area until the scene is cleared.
In addition, several areas are experiencing traffic slowdowns unrelated to the fire:
-
NJ 23 northbound is experiencing delays between County Route 618 (Kinnelon Road/Keil Road) in Butler and just north of Paterson-Hamburg Turnpike in West Milford Township, though all lanes remain open.
-
I-80 eastbound is congested near Exit 34 (NJ 15) in Wharton, also with all lanes open.
A wide range of construction activities, many scheduled until mid-afternoon, are contributing to ongoing disruptions across key routes:
-
US 46 in Parsippany-Troy Hills Township is particularly impacted, with lane closures in both directions near Beverwyck Road and Parsippany Boulevard due to roadwork.
-
NJ 23 is seeing active construction on both northbound and southbound lanes through Butler and Pequannock Township, with varying lane closures.
-
NJ 53 is undergoing construction in Denville Township, with shoulder closures and lane shifts near I-80 expected to continue until 3:00 p.m.
-
I-287 southbound is reduced at various points from Exit 39 (NJ 10) to Exit 37 (NJ 24) in Hanover Township, with right shoulder closures in effect until 5:00 p.m.
-
Long-term closures on I-80 at Exit 34 in Wharton began today in both directions. These full lane closures will last until 12:00 p.m. on June 25, 2025, with detours in place.
Drivers are advised to plan alternate routes where possible and remain alert to shifting traffic patterns and emergency personnel on site.
