Construction Causes Lane Closures and Shoulder Work on Major Morris County Highways
Daytime construction activities are impacting travel on I-80, US 46, I-287, and other key routes, with various closures expected to last through the afternoon.
As of the morning of June 5, 2025, several active construction projects are affecting traffic flow across major highways in and around Morris County, according to updates from state transportation authorities. The work involves both lane and shoulder closures on I-80, US 46, NJ 15, I-287, NJ 23, NJ 24, and NJ 124, with most closures scheduled to remain in place until mid to late afternoon.
On Interstate 80, multiple segments are under construction:
-
Eastbound I-80 between Exit 35 (Mount Hope Avenue, Rockaway Township) and Exit 43 (I-287, Parsippany-Troy Hills) is experiencing a left lane closure until 1:30 PM.
-
A right shoulder closure is also in effect near Exit 37 (CR 513/Hibernia Avenue, Rockaway Township) until 3:00 PM.
-
Additionally, near Exit 34 (NJ 15, Wharton), a left lane closure is in place on the eastbound side until 10:00 PM, and on the westbound side until 12:00 PM, both part of longer-term work expected to extend through June 25, 2025.
On U.S. Route 46, construction is causing various disruptions:
-
In Parsippany-Troy Hills, the westbound left lane is closed near Cherry Hill Road (CR 654) until 3:00 PM.
-
In Denville Township, both directions near NJ 53 are affected, with right shoulder closures on both the eastbound and westbound sides until 3:00 PM.
-
Between Denville and Mountain Lakes, additional right shoulder closures are in place in both directions between Mountain Lakes Boulevard (CR 618) and NJ 53, also lasting until 3:00 PM.
On NJ Route 15, northbound traffic is restricted to one lane between Espanong Road/Weldon Road (Jefferson Township) and Main Street (Sparta Township), with the right lane closed until 2:00 PM.
Interstate 287 northbound is under construction from south of Exit 41 (I-80, Parsippany-Troy Hills) to north of Exit 45 (Vreeland Avenue, Montville Township). The right shoulder is closed until 3:00 PM.
Other state routes seeing closures include:
-
NJ Route 23 northbound, near Cotluss Road in Riverdale, with a right shoulder closure until 3:00 PM.
-
NJ Route 24 westbound, near Exit 2 (CR 510/Columbia Turnpike, Florham Park), where the right shoulder is closed until 2:00 PM.
-
NJ Route 124 westbound, at Roosevelt Avenue and Minton Avenue in Chatham, remains fully open despite active work, with completion expected by 3:00 PM.
These infrastructure improvements, while causing short-term travel disruptions, are part of ongoing efforts to maintain and upgrade critical roadways throughout northern New Jersey. Motorists are advised to plan alternate routes where possible and to expect delays, particularly in the affected corridors during peak travel periods.
