Sussex Tpke Closure in Randolph Begins July 21 for Gas Main Installation

Two-month NJ Natural Gas project will require weekday lane closures and detours through late September.

RANDOLPH TWP. — A major gas infrastructure project will prompt a long-term westbound lane closure along Sussex Turnpike beginning Monday, July 21, as New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG) begins installing a new gas main between Canfield Avenue and west of Park Avenue, near 1578 Sussex Turnpike.

The work is scheduled to occur weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and is expected to continue through September 30, 2025, weather permitting. The construction will be carried out by Gray Supply Construction Company under the management of NJNG.

To facilitate the installation, the westbound lane of Sussex Turnpike will be closed between Canfield Avenue and the Randolph Tennis Center, with traffic detoured through surrounding roads. Eastbound traffic will remain open, but lane restrictions and flagger-controlled operations will be in place.

Detour Route for Westbound Traffic:

  • Turn right onto Canfield Avenue

  • Turn left onto Route 10 West

  • Take the jughandle for Mt. Freedom Road

  • Continue straight onto Sussex Turnpike to rejoin the route

The lane closure may also affect intersecting streets, and additional road closures may occur if required. Motorists are advised to expect delays and plan alternate routes during construction hours.

The gas main extension project is part of NJNG’s continued efforts to improve infrastructure reliability and service capacity in the region. For more information or to report concerns, residents may contact the Morris County Division of Engineering and Transportation at (973) 285-6750.

Drivers are urged to use caution in the work zone and stay alert for changing traffic patterns and detour signs.
