Brush Fire and Road Construction Cause Major Delays in Morris County

A brush fire on I-287 in Boonton and multiple construction projects on US 46, NJ 15, NJ 10, and I-80 are affecting traffic on Tuesday, with lane and shoulder closures expected through the afternoon.

A brush fire was reported at 12:37 p.m. on Interstate 287 southbound, just south of Exit 44 for U.S. Route 202 in Boonton. One of the three southbound lanes and the right shoulder are closed as crews respond to the incident. Motorists traveling through the area should anticipate delays while emergency responders work to contain the fire.

In addition to the fire-related closure, several construction projects are underway across Morris County, impacting major roadways.

On U.S. Route 46, multiple projects are affecting both directions of travel:

  • Westbound near Naughright Road in Mount Olive Township, the right lane is closed until 2 p.m.

  • Eastbound between Cherry Hill Road (County Route 654) and U.S. 202/Parsippany Boulevard (County Route 511) in Parsippany-Troy Hills Township, the right lane will remain closed until 3 p.m.

  • Westbound in the same Parsippany-Troy Hills corridor, the right lane is also closed until 3 p.m.

  • Eastbound near Main Street (County Route 644) in Rockaway Township, the right shoulder is closed until 3 p.m.

  • Westbound near Main Street in Denville Township, the right shoulder is closed until 3 p.m.

Additional lane and shoulder closures are also in effect:

  • On NJ 15 northbound, between north of NJ 181/Espanong Road/Weldon Road in Jefferson Township and north of County Route 517/Sparta Bypass in Sparta Township, the right shoulder is closed until 3 p.m.

  • On NJ 10 westbound, near the I-287 interchange in Hanover Township, the right shoulder is closed until 4 p.m.

  • On I-80 westbound, between west of Exit 35 (Mount Hope Avenue) and east of Exit 34 (NJ 15) in Rockaway Township, the right shoulder is closed until 3 p.m.

Drivers are advised to plan for extra travel time and consider alternate routes where possible. Updates will be provided as conditions change and as closures are lifted throughout the day.
