Crash and Delays Impact Major Roads in Morris County

A crash in Clark Township and multiple construction zones have contributed to widespread traffic delays across northern New Jersey as of Tuesday afternoon.

As of 3:31 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23, a crash on the Garden State Parkway northbound just north of Exit 135 (Central Avenue) in Clark Township has contributed to traffic congestion in the area. Although all lanes remain open, motorists are experiencing delays extending from south of Exit 135 to south of Exit 136 (Stiles Street), according to the latest traffic reports. The affected segment spans approximately two miles.

In addition to the incident on the Parkway, numerous other highways across northern and central New Jersey are reporting delays due to high volume and ongoing construction projects:

  • NJ Route 24 is experiencing eastbound delays from east of Exit 8 (Summit Avenue/NJ 124) in Millburn Township to I-78 in Springfield Township, and westbound delays from east of Exit 1 (CR 511/Whippany Road) in Morris Township to I-287 in Hanover Township.

  • NJ Route 17 southbound is congested from Ridgewood Avenue in Paramus to Passaic Street in Rochelle Park Township, while nearby construction on both northbound and southbound lanes between East Rutherford and Rutherford continues to impact flow.

  • I-280 westbound has slowdowns from east of the Stickel Drawbridge in Harrison to east of Exit 13 (Orange Street/1st Street) in Newark.

  • New Jersey Turnpike - Western Spur is experiencing a two-mile northbound delay from the Southern Mixing Bowl to just south of Interchange 15W (I-280) in Newark. Southbound delays of approximately 1.5 miles are also reported near the same interchange in Kearny.

  • US 1&9/Tonnelle Avenue southbound traffic is slowed from north of Secaucus Road in North Bergen Township to Manhattan Avenue in Jersey City.

  • Hudson County Extension of the NJ Turnpike westbound is seeing delays from Interchange 14A (NJ 440/Bayonne Bridge) in Bayonne to just east of the Newark Bay Bridge.

Further exacerbating the afternoon commute are a series of active construction projects:

  • George Washington Bridge: One right lane is closed on the upper eastbound level until 4:30 p.m.

  • NJ Route 4: Both westbound and eastbound local lanes between Englewood and Paramus are impacted by right shoulder closures through 5:00 p.m.

  • NJ Route 57, US 46, and several internal port streets in Newark, including Corbin Street, Port Street, and Inner Port Street, are experiencing full or partial closures due to long-term infrastructure work.

  • I-80 eastbound is experiencing ramp closures at Exit 56B (Squirrelwood Road) in Woodland Park until 3:00 p.m. on November 18, 2025.

Motorists are advised to allow additional travel time, consider alternate routes where possible, and stay alert for changing traffic patterns. Despite the delays, no serious injuries have been reported in connection with the Parkway crash as of this writing.
