Lane Closures, Trafifc Signals Down, Police Activity and Delays Across Northern Jersey

Ongoing police activity, traffic signal malfunctions, and widespread roadwork are contributing to significant delays on major highways including I-80, the New Jersey Turnpike, and US 46.

As of early Monday afternoon, October 20, 2025, motorists in northern New Jersey are encountering a variety of disruptions across key roadways, ranging from police activity and downed traffic signals to extensive construction and roadwork affecting traffic flow across multiple counties.

Key Incidents:

  • Police Activity on I-80 Eastbound in Totowa: As of 11:39 a.m., police activity has closed the ramp lane at Exit 55 (NJ 62/Union Boulevard) on I-80 eastbound. No further details have been released regarding the nature of the incident.

  • Traffic Signal Malfunction in Elizabeth: A downed traffic signal was reported at 9:02 a.m. on NJ 439 southbound at Brunswick Avenue in Elizabeth. One of the two southbound lanes remains closed.

  • Turnpike Delays Near Kearny: As of 11:29 a.m., motorists on the New Jersey Turnpike’s Western Spur southbound are experiencing a two-mile delay near Interchange 15W (I-280 in Kearny) due to an earlier incident.

Major Construction Projects:

Several active construction zones are contributing to delays throughout Morris, Passaic, Essex, Hudson, and Union counties. Notable projects include:

  • US 46 in Parsippany-Troy Hills and Denville Townships: Both eastbound and westbound lanes are affected by shoulder closures until 3:00 p.m. Additionally, separate construction is underway on US 46 eastbound near Mountain Lakes Boulevard, with closures scheduled until 5:00 p.m.

  • I-80 Construction in Passaic County: Ongoing work is closing right shoulders eastbound from Exit 52 in Wayne through Exit 57 in Paterson. Separately, Exit 56B ramp to Squirrelwood Road in Woodland Park is fully closed until 3:00 p.m. on November 18.

  • I-280 Projects in Essex County: Multiple eastbound construction zones with right shoulder closures are active throughout West Orange, Orange City, and Kearny, continuing until 3:00 p.m.

  • Bridge Construction Projects: Reduced lanes and speed restrictions are in effect on the George Washington Bridge (until 4:30 p.m.), Goethals Bridge (until 1:00 p.m.), and Bayonne Bridge (until 2:00 p.m.).

  • Marin Boulevard, Corbin Street, and Port Street in Newark and Jersey City: Full and partial closures are in place on several roads servicing the port and waterfront areas, with detours affecting access to Corbin Street from Port Street. These closures are expected to remain in effect until December 2025.

Additional Traffic Alerts:

  • NJ Turnpike Eastern Spur in Secaucus: Roadwork near Interchange 17E (NJ 3/Lincoln Tunnel) is causing both a ramp and lane closure.

  • NJ 24 and NJ 27 in Morris and Essex Counties: Daytime construction is limiting lane availability on NJ 24 eastbound through Morris Township and Florham Park and on NJ 27 in Newark.

Motorists are advised to check live traffic updates and plan alternate routes where possible to avoid delays. Authorities are urging caution in all active work zones.
