Randolph Township and NJ Department of Transportation Advance Major Roadway Safety Improvements
Randolph Township officials, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), and members of the state legislative delegation gathered on Wednesday, December 10 with the NJDOT Commissioner to advance critical roadway and pedestrian safety improvements throughout the township. The session included NJDOT Commissioner Francis O’Connor, Senator Anthony Bucco, Assemblywoman Aura Dunn, members of the Randolph Township Council, Township Administration, and the Randolph Police Department.
The event began at the Randolph Municipal Building before traveling to the Route 10/Center Grove Road intersection to review current traffic challenges and discuss planned enhancements on-site. Discussion focused on several priority locations, including:
- Dover Chester Road & Route 10: planned improvements to enhance traffic flow and pedestrian access, including restriping, lane adjustments, and crosswalk connectivity.
- Center Grove Road Corridor: a suite of signal and pedestrian safety upgrades such as a split-phase signal, improved ADA-compliant crossings, and enhanced monitoring technology.
- Sussex Turnpike Underpass: longstanding flooding concerns and the township’s request for an automated water-level warning system to improve driver safety and reduce emergency response strain.
Randolph Township officials emphasized the importance of partnership in addressing long-standing transportation needs.
“Today’s event with Commissioner O’Connor and the NJ Department of Transportation marked a huge milestone in improving safety and traffic flow within Randolph Township,” said Randolph Mayor Joe Hathaway. “Improving Route 10 has been a priority for residents, commuters, and local business owners for decades, and in partnership with the State, we are delivering these necessary upgrades that will improve quality of life for everyone in Randolph. I want to especially thank Commissioner O’Connor, the Randolph Police Department, and the township administration for their hard work and leadership to make these projects happen.”
Township Manager Greg Poff also highlighted the value of continued coordination, reiterating that Randolph is committed to advancing transportation improvements grounded in safety, smart planning, and professional management.
NJDOT Commissioner O’Connor emphasized this focus on collaboration and long-term safety.
“Our goal is to eliminate all roadway fatalities in New Jersey by 2040, and projects like these will help us meet that challenge,” NJDOT Commissioner O’Connor said. “From busy interstates to local main streets, the Department is committed to making travel safer for everyone. Today represents what can be accomplished when local communities and the State come together to improve safety and make a lasting difference in the lives of all roadway users.”
Additional updates and next steps will be shared with the public as the projects progress.
