NJ Transit is creating its first-ever sustainability plan as highlighted in NJT2030: A 10-Year Strategic Plan, incorporating feedback from stakeholders to help shape the future of sustainability at NJT.

“Commitment to sustainability is one of the most important commitments NJ TRANSIT has made as we strive for a clean energy future,” said New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner and NJ TRANSIT Board Chair Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti. “We’re on track to fully transition to a zero-emissions bus fleet by 2040. This plan aligns with Governor Murphy’s Energy Master Plan to ensure NJ TRANSIT be a leader in sustainability.”

The sustainability plan includes goals to reduce water and energy consumption, create equitable transportation and clean vehicle technology, and enhance the “customer experience.”

“According to the Federal Transit Administration, the estimated change in an individual’s carbon footprint by shifting from driving to transit would be a 33 percent reduction if shifting to bus, a 62 percent reduction if shifting to light-rail, and a 65 percent reduction if shifting to commuter rail.” NJ Transit Sustainability

For NJT, the first step in the sustainability plan is identifying what matters most to NJ Transit’s stakeholders. NJT will be reaching out to stakeholders and the general public, environmental advocates, community leaders, customers, and agency employees to develop the framework for the plan.

A series of webinars and surveys will gather input and keep the public informed of NJTs progress towards their sustainability goals. The first webinar is Wednesday, March 23 at 6:00 PM.

“Thanks to the comprehensive roadmap established through NJT2030, NJ TRANSIT is working harder than ever to promote a more sustainable future for our planet,” said President & CEO Kevin S. Corbett. “NJ TRANSIT’s first-of-its-kind Sustainability Plan will build on efforts already underway in a cleaner rail and bus fleet, expanding and optimizing solar energy assets, implementing energy efficiency and conservation measures – in short, furthering our goal to be one of the most socially responsible, environmentally-friendly transit agencies in the world.”
